South Africa's largest but most sparsely populated province, the Northern Cape is a region of arid, semi-desert stretches and unforgiving terrain. Endless horizons, a scorching sun, and baked earth are a part of what encapsulates this province. Unending roads lead to some of the most pristine and untouched national parks South Africa has to offer.
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, shared with Botswana, is a 3.6 million hectare reserve that black-maned lions, big cats and raptors all call home. In Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and Augrabies Falls National Park, you can see a plethora of plants and animals uniquely adapted to this particular biosphere. A diverse array of animals such as meerkat, oryx, springbok, bat-eared foxes and hyena can be found in the Northern Cape and Augrabies boasts a population of highly endangered black rhino.
Whilst the presence of historic towns, diamond mining sites and the Great Hole of Kimberley pay homage to the region's mineral might, it is the sense of remoteness and dramatic beauty that makes the Northern Cape such a fascinating destination.
