Being the furthest island from the main Central Dalmatian islands, Vis is a former military base for the Yugoslavian Army from 1950's through to 1989, during which time the island was isolated from any visitors or travellers. This isolation period unintentionally ensured that Vis remained largely unspoilt from development and tourism. As a result, Vis is known for authenticity, peace, beauty and nature.
There are many beautiful beaches on Vis, although most are not sandy but slightly rocky pebbles. Snorkelling and swimming are the perfect ways to appreciate the waters and a kayak or boat hire means you can explore the coastline and tiny uninhabited islands off the shores of the main island.
Leisurely and peaceful strolls are a fantastic way to appreciate the island and take in all its glory at a slow pace. Alternatively there are facilities to hire cars and scooters, however some parts of the island are rather steep, so a taxi or driver may be preferable.
For life at a slow pace with peace and tranquillity, Vis is the ideal spot.
