The Central Highlands will usually be your first glimpse of Costa Rica as you come into land in San José. The region is exceptionally scenic with green clad mountains and fertile valleys characterised by coffee plantations.
Pretty agricultural towns dot the landscape surrounded by spectacular and often active volcanoes. On the higher slopes cloud and rainforests are home to an incredible array of birds and flora and here you will find luxurious cosy lodges with open fires and hot tubs to keep you warm at the higher altitude in the cooler evening air.
Hidden cloud forest lodges are only accessible by rafting in on white water rapids. Be lost in nature for a night or two before heading back to civilisation to marvel at the spectacular Arenal Volcano and a plethora of adventurous activities before heading out to the coast. The interior is a wonderful region to explore, rich in wildlife and diverse ecosystems.
