Tierra Chiloé is on the mystical island that the lodge takes its name from. A truly hidden retreat at the end of the track leading to a sheltered Pacific Ocean bay. The lodge is built on stilts on a traditional island 'Palafito' design with wood tiles, warm and cosy wood interiors with floor to ceiling windows offerng constant views to the island ocean fjords, woods, green pastures and frequent changing of oceanic weather patterns.

There are 24 rooms furnished in neutral tones using local wood and curios from the island. All have large picture windows, even in the bathroom and no TV's. The idea is to make the most of the wilderness environment on guided excursions exploring on bikes, kayaks, riding and by pootling on the traditional Chilote wooden boat, the Williche, accompanied by a chef preparing a gourmet lunch.

The lodge is open between September to May - the Austral Spring, Summer and Autumn. The weather can be wild at any time of season so a four night stay is highly recommended. There are not always daily flights to the island from Santiago so this is another factor.

The lodge also has a wonderfully newly built Spa with outdoor heated infinity pool, indoor pool, sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and relaxation areas.

Delicious meals are served in the restaurant from an extensive buffet breakfast, 3 course lunches and dinners using local island produce from the kitchen garden and the local catch of the day. As expected, the wine cellar has a selection of some of the best Chilean wines.

Southern Chile is a long tract of temperate and sub antarctic land between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes where the summer 'window' is between the months of November and February. Days are wonderfully long with more chance of sunshine but interspersed with strong wind in the far south and cooler temperatures from the ice fields. November is beautiful, green and fresh with spring flowers.

December and January can see the warmest weather, perfect for trekking and immersion in the outdoors. Always take a fleece and a rain jacket in the northern part of the region where it be very wet, woolly hat and bandana on any given summer's day!
