The location of The Emakoko is what makes it so special as it is perfectly situated in the untamed wilderness on the edge of the Nairobi National Park, yet only a short distance from the city centre, Karen, and both airports, which gives this lodge the exceptional advantage of being able to be on safari in the city.

The Emakoko is home to Emma and Anthony Childs who personally host clients with the help of their dedicated team of staff.

There are 10 large rooms each with a verandah that looks out over the National Park. Five of the rooms are situated at the main level and five are built into the cliff face higher up, which although there is a bit of a climb to get to them, they are well worth it for the spectacular views!

The lodge has a lovely swimming pool overlooking the river, a boutique with a variety of locally crafted gifts, various sitting areas, plus a dining room which offers a range of different menus, using products fresh from the garden.

It is also on the the edge of Nairobi National Park, which boasts a spectacular assortment of birds and wildlife, so you can go to sleep listening to the sounds of lions roaring and hyena whooping.

The Daphne Sheldrick elephant orphanage is a game drive away, as is the Karen Blixen Museum and the Giraffe Centre. Hiking can also be arranged, as too can running in the local area.

Region

Nairobi is the beating heart of Kenya. This cosmopolitan and energetic city is juxtaposed next to the tranquility of its rural surroundings. With a vibrant nightlife and plenty of cultural sites, such as the Karen Blixen museum, Nairobi remains true to its roots, yet is unrestrained by them, as it seeks to push forward into the 21st century with the same ambition and pace that proved so successful in the 20th.

Besides its urban attractions, Nairobi is the perfect base from which to explore Kenya. Within reach are the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and the AFEW Giraffe Centre as well as the Nairobi National Park, meaning that the city is able to fuse culture and nature.

It is this unique combination of experiences that make people fall unexpectedly in love with Nairobi. Consequently, it is easy to see why it has come to be known as 'The Capital of Wildlife'.

Kenya is a country with three distinct types of climate: the coastal region is hot and humid; the mountains and plateaus are temperate; and the north and east are hot and dry. Like it’s equatorial neighbour, Ethiopia, Kenya only experiences small seasonal variations in temperature. However, the warmest period is between February and March, and the coolest months are July and August.

The two prevailing winds create two seasons: from October to March, the hot and originally dry winds come from Arabia, whereas, from April to September, the prevailing winds are cooler and wetter, and come from the Indian Ocean. At the beginning of these two periods there are two short rainy seasons. The most intense rains are between March and May, and the less intense rains from October to December.
