Playa Cativo Eco Lodge is a beachfront boutique hotel on the Golfo Dulce offering an unparalleled experience set in 1,000 acres of private rain forest, surrounded by the Piedras Blancas National Park, a former extension of the Corcovado National Park.

Sheltered from the wild surf of the Pacific Ocean it is best suited for those that want a true immersion in nature completely away from any other development, free from any traffic, aircraft or motor boat noise. The only noises that you will hear are birdsong, monkey calls and the lapping of gentle waves and swaying of tree branches.

The atmosphere is one of house guest, with extremely attentive but informal service from highly experienced staff, which is never intrusive.

There are 18 elegant guest rooms which are divided into three different categories; deluxe, luxury and premium according to their location and size. All of them are beautifully furnished in colonial plantation style and have a king bed plus a day bed which can be made up for an extra child or adult.

The bathrooms showcase hand-painted tiles and sinks and have rain showers with hot water supply.

Ventilation is provided by ceiling fans and the natural sea breezes. For honeymoon couples the free-standing casita is the most romantic, nestled away in the gardens.

Children over the age of 12 are welcome at the lodge but there are no specific facilities available and none of the rooms connect, but most rooms sleep 3 and the Premium rooms can sleep 4. The lodge is only accessible by boat and so we recommend it more for older children or teenagers.

Mornings usually start early at sunrise (05:00 - 06:00) with the dawn chorus. Self-service hot drinks and juices are available before breakfast.

Take an early morning swim or stroll along the shore to the jetty spotting the many species of birds and scurrying coatis. Relax or be as active as you like throughout the rest of your day, spend an hour or so on the extremely comfortable sun loungers by the pool, gently paddle on a SUP or enjoy the privacy and comfort of your suite.

Coffee, tea and spring water are always available from the complimentary self-service table along with snacks and treats!

Region

The south Pacific Coast and particularly the Osa Peninsula is known for its pristine, untouched nature. The Corcovado National Park covers half of the peninsular and is mainly primary rainforest with more than 400 bird species and 6 big cat species. The coastline is also pristine with rewarding snorkelling and diving. Humpback whales can usually be seen breeding and with their young in August and September and migrating in the latter months to December.

Some say that the original Eco-lodge was born on the Osa Peninsular. Unbeknown to their creators, the owners of Lapa Rios Lodge pioneered sustainable tourism by purchasing 1,000 acres of rainforest in 1990 to create a protected reserve. Lapa Rios has gone from strength to strength and their model has been followed not only in Osa but worldwide.

A visit to Costa Rica is not complete without a stay at one of the remote pristine regions to fully immerse oneself in the beauty of the natural world and the Osa Peninsular and south Pacific Coast is the perfect place to re-connect with nature.

Similar to the Caribbean the only months to avoid are September and October which are the height of the wet season. Very wet days and overcast.

November to March are considered dry, sunny and warm to hot, can be humid and always expect a chance of rain. Being close to the equator sunset is always early evening with temperatures decreasing to more comfortable levels.

April to August is called the Green Season with more chance of rain but in shorter bursts with still lovely sunny days and high temperatures.
