Region

São Tomé and Principe is a two-island country and Africa's second smallest nation, lying in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Africa.

In São Tomé you can sip some of the world's best coffee, eat delicious fruit and fresh seafood, feast on gourmet chocolate made on the island, stay in the crumbling old colonial houses, snorkel and dive in uncharted waters, trek the jungles, and explore fishermen's villages at your own pace away from the hustle and bustle. São Tomé's Town is a charming, colonial capital where the accommodation is in old cocoa plantation houses.

Principe is the smaller of the two islands and is, if at all possible, even more laid-back than São Tomé; its only main town, San Antonio, has some distinctive colonial architecture, whilst its beaches are deserted and its waters are good for snorkelling, with pristine beaches, and fabulous fishing.

São Tomé and Principe can be visited at any time throughout the year. December and January are best for birding as the birds adopt their wonderfully bright breeding plumage. The long dry season is best for trekking and from November to February turtles nest on the beaches. In addition to these land based attractions, humpback whales, killer whales and dolphins can be seen off the northeast coast from August to October.
