Matusadona Luxury Houseboat

Kariba , Zimbabwe

Matusadona has been described as “an intimate luxury lodge on the water”. With a length of 28.6 meters, a beam of 6.85, powered by two reliable 420 hp diesel motors, Matusadona is made up of three elegantly furnished decks with hardwood finishes and rich, classic fabrics.

The central air-conditioned Saloon Deck comprises a spacious lounge, indoor and outdoor dining areas, the gourmet galley and the wheelhouse.

The Upper Deck, perhaps the most popular of all, provides a sociable bar, comfortable seating areas, al-fresco dining and a refreshing jacuzzi, all with panoramic views across the lake to distant horizons.

On sweltering summer evenings, sip on refreshing cocktails in the jacuzzi under the stars, or at the bar, and on the odd chilly African evening, warm up with a Cognac in the cosy saloon and watch a variety of wildlife documentaries or the authentic "buidling of Kariba".

The lower accommodation deck provides guests with three en-suite cabins, each tastefully decorated and made up with a queen size bed and cotton percale linens, offering air-conditioning and mosquito proof portholes. With spacious air-conditioned cabin accommodation for up to six passengers, situated right on the waterline, you’ll feel at one with nature. The gentle lapping of waves, the frequent grunt of the hippos, the

distant lion’s roar, the cough of a leopard, the eerie cry of the Fish Eagle and all the attendant sounds of Africa - you’re in the real bush whilst cocooned in the lap of luxury.

Matusadona does not sail alone, she comes with three attendant boats. The speed-boat is ideal for transfers and for water-based activities for a small group of guests. The luxury pontoon seats up to 10 guests, offers a spacious angling deck and is also used for game-viewing and sunset cruises. The third is a small tender, specifically used for mooring by the crew.

Viewing wildlife from water offers a completely different experience to land-based game viewing and watching a herd of elephants coming down to drink, the calves frolicking in the water with their mothers suspiciously standing by, is a truly memorable experience.

Travelling to a different and secluded mooring every day, you will always awaken to a new experience, be it at one of the numerous islands, up one of the rivers, or on the main shores of the Matusadona National Park, these are experiences that many can only dream about.

Matusadona is undoubtedly the most luxurious vessel on Lake Kariba and offers the perfect venue for an amazing family holiday, a romantic honeymoon or simply a break from ‘real’ life.

Region

Kariba is the largest man-made lake in Africa and offers the best of both worlds with both land and water based activites.
Lake Kariba offers wonderful houseboat safaris.

The Matusadona National Park is one of the Zambezi valley's wildlife and wilderness treasures. Remote and rugged, this wonderful park encompasses Lake Kariba's most beautiful southern shorelines. Creeks and bays, a vast flat bush-covered plateau cut by numerous riverlines, and the wild, wide, 600m high Matusadona mountain range divides the Zambezi valley from the upland farmlands behind. The Park lies about 20km across the lake from the town of Kariba, and is bounded by two spectacularly beautiful rivers. In the west, the Ume, which meets the lake in a wide estuary and in the east, the Sanyati with its magnificent, steep sided, rocky gorge.

Many of the wild animals rescued from the rising waters of the newly-formed Lake Kariba by conservationist Rupert Fothergill and his teams during the much-publicised Operation Noah in 1958 were released into the Matusadona National Park. Today, it is an Intensive Protection Zone for the endangered black rhinoceros and one of the few places in Southern Africa where visitors may be lucky enough to see this magnificent animal in the wild. This park is a treat for visitors wanting to see Africa's other big mammals including elephant, buffalo, hippo, lion, leopard, cheetah, zebra and various antelope species.

A major attraction of the lake shores of the Matusadona is the fishing. The magnificent tigerfish, endemic to the Zambezi River, is a thrilling sport fish for avid anglers. Various other species including several types of bream make good eating and can be found in abundance among the drowned forests and shallow weedbeds all along the shoreline of the National Park.
