Thousands of islands can be found in the Caribbean Sea, starting at The Bahamas and working south toward Trinidad and Tobago. The Caribbean is split into roughly five regions, beginning with The Bahamas, just south-west of Miami. Further south you will find the Leeward Islands, the Windward Islands and finally the Greater and Lesser Antilles.
Each region boasts its own unique culture and each island within has a soul and flavour all its own. Many of the islands have a rich colonial history, having been occupied by French, British, Dutch or other European powers. Though many islands now are governed on their own accords, the history refines each locale.
The tropical location of the sea allows visitors to bask not only in the sunlight, but in the natural beauty of this island chain. Each island has a unique terrain; some boast active volcanoes and mountain ranges begging to be hiked while others are flat and protected by stunning coral reefs rife with aquatic creatures.
In the US Virgin Islands, you'll find the pristine beaches, sparkling waters and national parks distinctive of the Caribbean. These islands are culturally diverse, ethnically rich, and artistically vibrant. This blending of a serene landscape and deep historical culture makes the islands ideal for a yacht charter vacation. The Virgins Islands are famous for year round cruising. The temperature ranges from 80's in winter to 90's in summer. In the winter, there's a slight wind shift to the north with wind speeds of 15 - 20 knots. In the summer, the winds shift to east-southeast and blow around 10 - 15 knots. There is no real rainy season. Showers tend to be in short bursts with blue skies to follow.
The British Virgin Islands remain relatively unspoilt with long sweeps of land linking lush green headlands. A variety of terrain including rainforests and reef-lined shores give picturesque views, while a labyrinth of beachside boulders give even the avid adventurer an exploration to remember. Beautiful stretches of hidden beaches line the scalloped coastlines whilst ashore you will find first-class restaurants and resorts, combining Caribbean tradition and glamour.
From the sophisticated French island of St Barth's to the old world charm of Antigua, this archipelago offers an exotic concoction of diverse history, cultures and cuisine. From Caribbean jerk chicken cooked up in casual beach bars to fresh fish served in fine dining settings, the Leeward Islands and the varied cultural influences offer true gastronomic feasts. This combination of traditional Caribbean heritage and modern influences make the Caribbean Sea a truly magical holiday destination.
