Region

The 24th largest state in the USA and sitting in the heart of the country, Illinois boasts scenic byways, weaving networks of lakes and rivers, a plethora of parks (both state and national) and even vineyards. The state of Illinois has been home to four US presidents over the course of history.

Abraham Lincoln is brought back to life at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum in Springfield and visitors can dine at President Obama's favourite restaurants in the Chicago suburbs. Sitting on Lake Michigan, Chicago can boast 29 miles of lakefront, including sandy beaches and cycle paths meaning skyscrapers rub shoulders with parks and waters. Culturally, Chicago has a lot to offer with interactive public art, authentic Blues music, interesting architecture, fine dining and world-class museums and theatre. The city is most famous for being the start of Route 66.

In Central Illinois, discover picturesque Amish country, where black buggies rule the road, teams of rugged Belgian horses plough the fields of storybook farms and the locals are likely to greet you with a friendly wave as you pass. Further south in St Louis, discover America’s ancient past at Cahokia Mounds. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the remains of a prehistoric city that stood from 800 to 1400 AD.

Overall there is a lot to discover in Illinois. From plenty of family friendly activities and outdoor adventures such as hiking and biking, zip-wiring to golf and music festivals as well as a rich history to explore, this is a region that has alot to entice visitors.
