Bisate Lodge is located in the natural amphitheatre of an eroded volcanic cone and has dramatic views of the peaks of the volcanoes Bisoke and Karisimbi rearing up through the Afro-alpine forests of nearby Volcanoes National Park.

Bisate is within easy driving distance of Volcanoes National Park Headquarters, from where gorilla treks depart daily.

contributes to Bisate’s biodiversity conservation and local community projects – making a far-reaching impact on an iconic Critically Endangered species: the mountain gorilla.

Aside from tracking one of the several habituated gorilla groups, activities include visiting nearby natural attractions, hiking to Dian Fossey’s grave, and observing the Park’s group of Endangered endemic golden monkeys. Walks on Bisate’s property offer birding and participation in the reforestation programme.

Region

Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Massif that straddles three countries, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of conga and Uganda. It is home to six towering, extinct volcanoes that penetrate the clouds. Its lower slopes are covered in bamboo forest with a rich otherwordly woodland. This national park mades up a 44,800 hectare (110,000 acre) conservation area that is a World Heritage Site and home to over 600 mountain gorillas.

Volcanoes National Park is considered to be the best place in East Africa to track gorillas, thanks to its easy access to twelve habituated gorilla groups. Aside from this great ape, other mammals that call the park home include golden monkey, black-fronted duiker, serval, buffalo, tree hyrax, elephant, bushbush and Egyptian mongoose. Some 178 bird species are found here too, including at least 13 endemic to the Virunga area such as the Rwenzori turaco, Archer's robin-chat, Rwenzori batis, Rwenzori apalis and the red-faced woodland-warbler.

Volcanoes National Park can be visited at anytime of the year. The weather rarely reaches levels that prevent visitors from trekking or seeing the gorillas. However, most tourists prefer to safari during the drier months (June to September and December to February) as wildlife trails are not as boggy and the Park is easily accessible.
