Atmantan Wellness Resort is a total escape from the busy world outside. This is not just another spa resort but a hotel that takes wellness very seriously and understands the importance of not only taking the guests on a journey during their stay and achieving their goals but also how to take that new approach away and back into their own lifestyles.
The resort itself is located in a lovely location overlooking a lake some way outside of Pune, South of Mumbai. This is an area that is pretty untouched by any form of international tourism, and, although most will not generally leave the resort, those who do will see an authentic India.
Your journey at Atmantan begins from the moment you book. You will be connected to their team of health professionals, including doctors, to discuss the goals for your stay and to design the correct programme for you. From destressing & relaxation to weight loss or from fitness aspirations to post surgery or treatment recuperation, the highly qualified team is on hand.
Unlike some other 'wellness retreats' it is important to know that alcohol is not allowed here and the use of phones is banned in public areas. There is wifi in the rooms for personal time of course but the emphasis here is on getting back to basics. We love this concept.
One might also assume that the food may be boring, but this couldn't be more wrong. A fabulous female head chef with a serious passion for exciting yet healthy food is on hand to ensure even the most demanding taste buds are satisfied. Caffeine addicts alert, no coffee here for those on wellness retreats! Please also note that smoking is not permitted aside from in the designated area at the resort, which is well away from most facilities.
There are too many options on offer here to talk about them all but what we will say is the treatment rooms and spa area are stunning, the massages outstanding, the fitness classes varied (Bollywood aerobics to paddle yoga) and the service excellent.
Rooms are spread out over the hillside on which the resort is located and are divided up into Asoka and Arjuna Garden Groves houses, Acacia Lake Grove houses and the lovely Mango Tree Villa, a one bedroom Presidential style Suite.
Asoka and Arjuna houses range between 370 and 418 sq ft in size and each has a private balcony or small garden area where you can sit out if you wish and are located in blocks where there are upper and lower floors. Twin beds are possible in the Asoka and Arjuna rooms.
Acacia Lake Grove houses are slightly bigger at 440 sq ft and enjoy a glorious view of the lake. Once again rooms have either a balcony or garden area. All the rooms have satellite TVs, central air-conditioning with fresh air circulation provisions, telephones, refrigerators, electric steel kettles, wardrobe safes, iron and ironing board, hair dryers, bathrobes and exquisite aromatherapy bath products. All in-room bath products are free of harmful preservatives.
The Mango Tree Villa is currently the only one of its kind in the hotel and boasts its own private infinity pool looking out over the lake as well as a private gym, private couple's spa, sauna and steam facilities and a butler's pantry. At 1,500 sq ft, with 270 degree lake views and room for in villa dining, this option is certainly well worth booking for total privacy and the best experience you could wish for.
Maharashtra is most famous for its capital – Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. Mumbai is also one of the main entry points to India and so a stay of two or three nights is essential.
An exciting contrast between old and modern India, the city has progressed and grown at a rapid pace over the last decade or so, is the most populous city in India and is showing no signs of slowing down in fact quite the opposite! One exciting prospect of this forward thinking city is the cuisine and a generation who have discovered a love for dining out and are fuelling the momentum for a buzzing restaurant scene serving everything from Asian fusion to superb Mediterranean, fabulous cafes and bars and outstanding street food outlets.
Of course, Mumbai is the home of Bollywood and it is worth doing a bit of research on who’s who before heading to Mumbai as you may well find yourself having coffee or a cocktail next to them if you choose to dine or drink in one of the city’s cool spots. The heart of the city contains wonderful Victorian architecture, but explore a little deeper and you’ll uncover unique bazaars and hidden temples as well as the largest tropical forest in an urban zone.
Mumbai is of course famous for the Dharavi slums, which although well-known previously, were catapulted into the limelight by the film Slumdog Millionaire, and nowadays visitors have the opportunity to be shown around the slums and in fact this is inspiring and crucially, the majority of the profits are handed over to local charities. A short boat ride away from the city, the Elephanta Cave Temples, containing ancient rock art dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva, are well worth a visit.
Outside Mumbai, the incredible UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Ajanta and Ellora Caves, which are hand carved into the hillside rock, are accessed from Aurangabad and are certainly worth the side trip from Mumbai. Within driving distance from Mumbai, near Pune is also a fabulous wellness retreat overlooking a lake in a peaceful location. Overall, Maharashtra is a fascinating inclusion on any Indian adventure.
Atmantan is a 45 minute drive from Pune, Maharashrata's second largest city and known as the cultural hub of the state.
The resort is 90 minutes from Pune Airport and a three and a half hour drive from Mumbai Airport.
Atmantan is very much in the countryside with a small village located below the resort. If you take part in an activity that takes you to the countryside behind the resort you will encounter a few locals potentially who live a basic lifestyle in the hills.
