Region

Windhoek is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Namibia. Orignially developed at the site of a permanent spring, it is now the social, economic, political, and cultural centre of the country. She is a modern, well-groomed city, with neobaroque cathedral spires and German castles punctuating the skyline.

The Chistuskirche, a German Lutheran church, is a particularly interesting building, with a blend of neo-Gothic and art nouveau architecture making it reminiscent of a gingerbread house. For the history buffs, the National Museum of Namibia provides some enlightening context to the struggles of this young country. Housed in Windhoek’s oldest surviving building, dating back to the early 1980’s, she provides impressive memorabilia from the colonial period, as well as an excellent display of Namibia’s independence.

And of course, there is the Daan Viljoen Game Park, a beautiful nature reserve home to kudus, mountain zebras, warthogs and much more. Daan Viljoen is also known for its birdlife, and over 200 species have been recorded, including the rare green-backed heron.

Culture, history and lovely wildlife-rich desert hills truly make for an exciting stay.
