Vast areas of diverse wilderness, a wonderful climate year round and a rich cultural heritage are just a few of the reasons why Indonesia is one of the most fascinating countries you will ever explore.
Situated between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, it is the world's largest island country, with more than thirteen thousand islands spanning over Southeast Asia and Oceania. This incredible stretch of islands gives rise to a multitude of landscapes supporting a high level of biodiversity. Colossal mountains and volcanoes, dense woodlands and immaculate white-sand beaches lined by coral reefs are always nearby, whichever island you decide to visit.
Indonesia has eight UNESCO world heritage sites, four of which are dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the islands, such as Komodo National Park. Home to a huge variety of flora and fauna, including marine turtles, orchids and of course the Komodo dragon, this national park is a fabulous area to explore. Raja Ampat is on the tentative list for UNESCO and will no doubt be recognised very soon for the extraordinary natural beauty and importance for marine biodiversity.
Four of the other sites are dedicated to Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage, such as the Cultural Landscape of Bali Province, which consists of five rice terraces and their water temples, reflecting the concept of Tri Hita Karana, bring together the realms of the spirit, the human world and nature. Borobodur and Prambanan Temples found on the island of Java are are a sight to behold, however can get rather busy with visitors in the most popular times. To enjoy the spiritual atmosphere without so many people why not venture off to explore lesser-known temples in the local area?
From traditional war dances and megalithic sculptures to flavourful, vibrant cuisine; from mountainous terrain to serene coastlines, Indonesia boast a plethora of exciting opportunities for those who visit.
