African Horseback Safaris were early pioneers of horse riding safaris in Africa and nearly two decades later, they pride themselves on offering one of the most exciting and unique horseback adventures in Africa.

The Safaris are led by talented guides, plus the guests have 450,000 acres of pristine wilderness of the Okavango Delta to explore on experienced and calm horses, offering exhilarating rides alongside big game, such as zebra, giraffe and elephant.

Macatoo, the luxurious tented bush camp accommodation is in an exquisite African setting and offers the riding adventure of a lifetime. There are eight spacious tents set on their own raised platform, offering panoramic views of the flood plains. There is a swimming pool with a number of sun beds on the deck, where you can enjoy the view of the flood plains and watch game.

A short drive away there is the wonderful tree platform for drinks, lunches and even an exciting night spent sleeping under the stars.

The horses which are all boys are matched with each rider, based on their unique ability and personality. The guests rotate between two or three horses during their stay, so that the horses are given time to recover between rides. There are Thoroughbreds, Namibian Hanoverian, Percherons and Kalahari-Arab crossbreeds ranging between 14hh and 18hh (140-180cm).  Riders need to be over 12 years old, be fit and confident at all riding paces and weigh no more than 95kgs (210lbs or 15 stone).

Apart from riding there are game drives, mokoros (a traditional dugout canoe), fishing and helicopter flights available.

Region

This stunning and unique wetland area is formed by the Okavango River flowing into the Kalahari Desert. It creates the distinctive oasis known as the Okavango Delta.

Comprising of thousands of tiny islands, some solely made of small salt planes too salty to support plants, around 70% of the islands were originally termite mounds, however they now serve as land for wildlife.

Being a rarity in that it is one of the only sources of water available for animals and wildlife in day light hours means that it attracts thousands of animals. This creates a particularly special opportunity for observing many different animals, birdlife and fish.

The Okavango Delta can be explored in some rather exciting ways - on foot, in a game drive vehicle or in a Mokoro to delve into life in the floodwaters. However you decide to experience this wondrous oasis, it really is sure to be the trip of a lifetime.
