A coastal belt, rocky outcrops, scrublands, open grasslands and dense forest, all set in 131,693 hectares, provides for numerous species of animals in what is Sri Lanka’s largest wildlife sanctuary. Birthed in 1905, the Wildlife Park is known for its unique traits - shallow natural lakes filled with rainwater surrounded by open grassy plains, known as “Villu”.
There are over 31 different mammals at the park, ranging from Leopards and Sloth Bears to Water Buffalo and Asian Elephants, all amongst a variety of butterflies, tortoise, and various birds.
A Jeep safari is the perfect way to explore and experience Wilpattu, although due to its large area you may not always spot your favourite safari animal, but there are plenty more to make up for it.
