Amongst the sleepy hills of Northern Laos lies one of Asia's hidden gems, the UNESCO protected city of Luang Prabang. This small city is filled with ancient temples, French style mansions and bustling markets. In the early mornings a blanket of fog lies over the city while Monks observe their centuries old tradition of walking through the streets performing alms giving ceremonies.
Other than observing ancient customs, visitors can witness spectacular panoramic views across the old town by taking a short walk up to the Wat Chom Si temple at the peak of Mount Phou Si. This provides the perfect viewpoint from which to observe this magical city. Another worthwhile day trip is visiting the turquoise cascades of Kuang Si Falls that are just 20km outside the city. They are the largest waterfalls in the region and have a 50 metre drop into a spectacular pool before flowing on downstream.
Luang Prabang offers majesty as well as mystery, making it a great location for any exploration into South East Asia.
