With its absorbing mixture of vibrant Tamil culture paired with colonial charm, the North of Sri Lanka is a stark contrast in comparison to the rest of Sri Lanka. After struggling with Civil war for many years, this region can be seen as slightly more intimidating to the average traveller - however this need not to be the case!
The North offers rich pickings, with the stunning Nallur Kandaswamy (which still hosts daily rituals) a must see on your to do list. Visit Jaffna Fort, which was built in 1618 following the Portuguese invasion of Jaffna, and immerse yourself in the rich history it holds amongst its walls. The famous landmark that is the Sangiliyan statue isn’t far away, likewise for the Archaeological Museum, home to many artefacts from Northern Sri Lanka’s troublesome history.
